One of the best things about Auckland is how many completely different landscapes sit within an easy day's drive. Head south or south-east and the city quickly gives way to quiet coastal roads, rolling farmland, native bush and, a little further on, the open landscapes of the Waikato.

For this South Auckland edition, we have picked three very different ways to spend a day out of the city. The first follows the coast through Maraetai and Clevedon before a long lunch at Bracu. The second heads through the Hunua countryside towards Kaiaua and the Firth of Thames. The third stretches the legs further with a full day in Hamilton combining gardens, good food and classic cars.

As with the northern routes, these are not simply destinations with the fastest route programmed into the navigation. The morning drive, coffee stop, lunch and afternoon are all part of the plan. And if you are considering a luxury car rental in Auckland, choosing a car that suits the route can turn a simple day out into a much better driving experience.

1. Maraetai, Clevedon & Bracu: Coast to Country

The vibe: Harbour views, quiet country roads, a relaxed morning by the water and a proper destination lunch among the olive groves.

This is the polished option, but not in an overly formal way. The appeal comes from the transition between environments. You leave Auckland, find the coast around Maraetai, cross the countryside towards Clevedon and finish the morning among the rural landscapes south of the city.

Bracu might be the lunch destination, but taking the direct motorway route there would miss most of the point. This is a day for choosing the coast first and letting lunch come later.

Morning: Auckland to Maraetai via Whitford

Leave Auckland and head south-east towards Whitford. Once you move beyond the suburban sections, the landscape starts opening into paddocks, small hills and quieter roads.

Continue towards Maraetai and make the waterfront your first real stop. Grab a coffee, park near the beach and take a short walk beside the Hauraki Gulf before getting back behind the wheel.

The road from this side of Auckland towards the coast gives the morning a very different atmosphere from a straight motorway run south. On a clear day, the combination of water, islands and open views makes Maraetai feel considerably further from central Auckland than it really is.

From Maraetai, turn inland and continue towards Clevedon. This is the section to slow the pace and enjoy the countryside. Clevedon itself makes an easy second stop if you feel like another coffee or a quick wander before continuing south towards Bombay.

Lunch: Bracu Estate

Make Bracu Restaurant at 49 Main Road, Bombay the centrepiece of the day.

Set among the olive groves of Bracu Estate, the restaurant feels properly removed from Auckland despite being close enough for an easy day trip. The setting around the restored kauri villa is refined without feeling overly formal, making it the sort of place where arriving for lunch feels like an occasion in itself.

This is a lunch worth booking ahead and leaving time for. Rather than trying to fit another major activity into the middle of the day, settle in, enjoy the estate and let lunch be the destination.

If wine is part of the attraction for anyone in the group, leave the tasting to a passenger or designated driver. The person driving has already got the better end of the deal.

Afternoon: Bombay, Clevedon and the Scenic Way Home

After lunch, there is no need to immediately join State Highway 1 and point the car towards Auckland. Spend some time around the estate, then use the rural roads around Bombay to extend the afternoon.

If you still have plenty of daylight, loop back towards Clevedon before heading into the city. If lunch ran longer than planned, take the more direct route home. Either version works.

This is not a drive where you need a hard-edged sports car. Much of the enjoyment comes from the scenery, the relaxed pace and being comfortable enough to let the day unfold without watching the clock.

Best cars for the drive: The Bentley Bentayga suits this route almost perfectly, combining a genuine sense of occasion with the comfort you want for a long lunch and an unhurried drive home. The Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 offers a more extroverted alternative, with an elevated driving position and enough personality to make the countryside run feel anything but ordinary.

2. Hunua, Kaiaua & Miranda: Falls to the Firth

The vibe: Native bush, open country roads, a waterfall in the morning and fish and chips beside the Firth of Thames.

If the Bracu route is the polished one, this is the road-trip option. There is less emphasis on a luxurious destination and more on what happens between Auckland and the coast.

The day starts around the Hunua Ranges before pushing east through the countryside towards Kaiaua and Pūkorokoro Miranda. It is varied, relaxed and just far enough from Auckland to feel like you have properly gone somewhere.

It is also a good reminder that taking a special car out for the day does not mean every stop needs white tablecloths. Sometimes a waterfall in the morning and fish and chips by the sea make the better road trip.

Morning: Auckland to Hunua

Leave Auckland and head south-east towards Hunua. As the city falls away, the roads open into farmland before reaching the native bush surrounding the Hunua area.

Make Hunua Falls your first stop of the day. There is no need to turn this into a serious hiking trip. Get out, walk around the falls and forest, take your time for a while and then get moving again while the morning is still young.

From Hunua, continue east towards the Firth of Thames. This is where the route begins to feel genuinely removed from Auckland. Rural roads replace urban traffic, the landscape becomes broader and eventually the coast starts pulling into view.

It is the most driver-focused route in this South Auckland selection, which makes choosing something smaller and more involving particularly worthwhile.

Lunch: Fish and Chips in Kaiaua

Once you reach Kaiaua, keep lunch simple and stop at Kaiaua Fisheries.

This is exactly the sort of stop that works on a driving day. No elaborate reservation and no need to dress the trip up as something it is not. Order fish and chips, find a spot near the water and enjoy the fact that Auckland feels a long way behind you.

The contrast is part of the appeal. There is something inherently fun about parking a serious performance car outside a classic coastal fish and chip shop before continuing along the Firth.

Afternoon: Pūkorokoro Miranda and the Firth of Thames

After lunch, continue south-east towards the Pūkorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre at 283 East Coast Road, Miranda.

The wetlands and open shoreline make a completely different afternoon stop from the forest around Hunua. Visit the centre, follow the trails towards the bird hides or simply spend some time taking in the huge open landscape of the Firth of Thames.

If birdwatching is part of the plan, it is worth checking the tide before leaving Auckland. The best viewing is generally around high tide, so a little planning can make a noticeable difference to the stop.

From Miranda, start the loop back towards Auckland through the countryside. It is a longer return than simply turning around at Hunua, but that is precisely what makes this feel like a proper one-day road trip.

Best cars for the drive: The Porsche Boxster is the purist's choice. Light, compact and focused on driver involvement, it suits the sections where the road matters more than comfort. The Jaguar F-Type R approaches the same day from the other direction, adding V8 character and much more grand-touring comfort for the longer stretches.

3. Hamilton: Gardens, Good Food & Classic Cars

The vibe: An easy grand tour south, a morning somewhere completely different, a casual food hall lunch and an afternoon surrounded by motoring history.

Hamilton is the longest journey of the three, but it is also the easiest to build into a complete day away from Auckland.

This one is less about searching for corners and more about the classic idea of a grand tour. Choose a comfortable performance or luxury car, settle into the drive south, spend the day exploring Hamilton and enjoy having a good car for the journey home as much as for the way there.

Three stops give the day a natural rhythm: Hamilton Gardens in the morning, lunch at MADE and a final automotive stop at the Classics Museum.

Morning: Auckland to Hamilton Gardens

Leave Auckland early enough to arrive at Hamilton Gardens around opening time for the Enclosed Gardens.

Hamilton Gardens is not a conventional botanical garden. Its collection is built around different ideas, cultures and periods in garden design, with individual spaces taking you from Ancient Egypt and Renaissance Italy to Japanese, Indian and contemporary concepts.

That makes it much more interesting to explore than simply walking through landscaped parkland. Give yourself at least an hour or two rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.

It also works particularly well after the drive down from Auckland. You have spent the morning in the car, so parking up and wandering through the gardens gives the day a complete change of pace before lunch.

Lunch: MADE Hamilton

From the gardens, head into Hamilton East for lunch at MADE, 401 Grey Street.

MADE works well for this itinerary because there is no need for another formal destination lunch. The market and Mess Hall bring multiple food options together in one place, so everyone can choose whatever sounds good on the day.

It also keeps the Hamilton route feeling different from Bracu. This is the more urban day of the three, with a little more movement and a little less reason to spend two hours around one table.

Take enough time for lunch, but do not let the afternoon disappear. There is one more stop that makes particular sense when you have driven down from Auckland in a MotorShare car.

Afternoon: Classics Museum

Finish the afternoon at the Classics Museum at 11 Railside Place, Hamilton.

A classic car collection is an obvious final stop for a day built around driving, but it also gives the Hamilton itinerary something the other two routes do not have. After gardens and lunch, the day comes back to cars before the journey home.

Spend some time among the classic vehicles and motoring memorabilia, then get back into your own car and point it north.

The return to Auckland is where the choice of vehicle really matters on this trip. After a full day out, outright sharpness becomes less important than having something with power, refinement and enough comfort to make the final motorway section feel like part of the experience rather than simply the commute home.

Best cars for the drive: The Mercedes-Benz C63S is probably the sweet spot for Hamilton. It has genuine V8 character and performance while still being a comfortable luxury saloon for the Auckland-Hamilton return journey. Which South Auckland Day Trip Should You Choose?

The three routes offer completely different reasons to leave Auckland for the day.

Choose Maraetai, Clevedon and Bracu when the plan is a relaxed coastal morning followed by a proper destination lunch. It is the easiest route to make feel like an occasion without travelling particularly far.

Choose Hunua, Kaiaua and Miranda when you want the drive and the landscape to take centre stage. Native bush, rural roads and the Firth of Thames give this route the strongest traditional road-trip feel of the three.

And choose Hamilton when you want a full day away rather than simply a scenic loop. Hamilton Gardens, MADE and the Classics Museum give you enough to do that the drive becomes one part of a broader day out.

The right car changes with the route too. A Porsche Boxster makes sense when driver involvement is the priority. The Bentley Bentayga and AMG G63 suit a more relaxed country escape. For the longer Hamilton run, the combination of performance and comfort offered by a C63S or the outright refinement of a Rolls Royce Ghost starts to make much more sense.

Make the Journey Part of the Day

A good day trip does not need hundreds of kilometres or an overnight bag. South and south-east of Auckland, there is enough variety to go from the Hauraki Gulf to native bush, farmland, wetlands and the Waikato in the space of a few hours.

The trick is not to make every decision around getting somewhere as quickly as possible. Take the coastal route to Maraetai. Stop at Hunua before continuing towards the Firth. Give yourself enough time in Hamilton that the motorway is not the only thing you remember from the trip.

Most importantly, choose a car that suits the kind of day you want to have.
